Patrick Stewart returned as Jean-Luc Picard because the new series offered a changed character in a changed world. He had resisted earlier invitations to revisit Star Trek, but a fresh approach made the role interesting again.
At a 2019 fan convention, Stewart explained that his experience on Logan helped shape that decision. That film had taken Professor Charles Xavier into a very different setting. Stewart challenged producers Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman to imagine a similarly different world for Picard, rather than repeat the earlier series.
Both Stewart and Picard had grown older in the intervening years. The actor wanted those changes in life and outlook to matter to the story. His return, announced in August 2018, was therefore about exploring a new chapter for the character.
