Why Do U.S. Senators Serve Six-Year Terms?

Image
U.S. senators serve six-year terms because the Constitution's framers wanted a chamber with more continuity and independence than the House of Representatives. Six years was a compromise between competing ideas about stability and accountability. The length also fits a staggered election system: roughly one-third of Senate seats come before voters every two years. That means the country can change part of the chamber without replacing its entire elected membership at once. The choice was debated rather than discovered in a single obvious formula. The Senate's historical account describes proposals ranging from relatively short terms to life tenure. Some delegates wanted senators to have time to develop judgment and resist passing political pressures. Others worried that a long stay in office could distance members from the people and states they represented. A longer term could protect independent decisions, but it also postponed the next regular opportunity to replace a senato...

How Does the Champions League League Phase Work?

Image
The Champions League league phase places 36 clubs in one shared table. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents, with four games at home and four away. A win earns three points, a draw one point and a defeat none. After those eight games, the top eight clubs go directly into the round of 16. Teams finishing ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs, while those ranked 25th to 36th are eliminated. Unlike a traditional league, a club does not play every other team in the table. When clubs finish level on points, UEFA applies a sequence of tie-breakers. Goal difference comes first, followed by goals scored and away goals scored. Further criteria include wins and, if necessary, the combined results of a club’s opponents. A team’s position therefore depends on more than simply how many matches it wins.
