What Is Potash and Why Is It Important for Agriculture?
Potash is a group of potassium-containing salts used mainly to produce agricultural fertilizer. Potassium is one of the three primary nutrients plants need, alongside nitrogen and phosphorus. It supports important functions such as water regulation, nutrient movement, root development, and resistance to environmental stress. The most common commercial form of potash is potassium chloride, also called muriate of potash or MOP. Other forms include potassium sulfate and potassium-magnesium sulfate. Fertilizer products are often labeled using the N-P-K system, in which potassium is represented by the letter K. Most commercial potash comes from mineral deposits formed when ancient seas and saltwater basins evaporated. Today, it is obtained through conventional underground mining or solution mining.
