When Did the Brewers Move to Milwaukee?
The Brewers moved to Milwaukee in 1970 after Bud Selig bought the financially troubled Seattle Pilots. The relocation happened just a week before their first home game, returning a hometown major-league team to County Stadium after the Braves’ departure. A bankruptcy ruling on April 1 cleared the way for the move. The short notice left little time to prepare. Milwaukee used the Pilots’ existing uniforms, replacing the old team name with “Brewers,” rather than introducing the navy-blue-and-red colors Selig had wanted. Even ticket sales had to be organized in a hurry. The Brewers hosted the California Angels on April 7, 1970, and lost 12–0. The result was disappointing, but the occasion mattered beyond the score: Milwaukee once again had a major-league club of its own.
