What Kind of Bird Is a Seahawk?

A “sea hawk” is a nickname for the osprey, a bird of prey that specializes in catching fish. It is not a separate species with that official name. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology connects the familiar nickname with this fishing raptor, which lives around coasts as well as rivers and lakes.
Ospreys search for fish from the air and plunge toward the water feet first. Their feet have rough surfaces that help grip slippery prey, and an outer toe can turn backward, allowing two toes to face forward and two backward. These adaptations help the bird hold a struggling fish securely as it lifts away from the water.
Despite the seaside nickname, an osprey does not need the ocean. Shallow water with accessible fish and a suitable elevated nest site can provide the essentials. According to Cornell’s species account, live freshwater and saltwater fish make up about 99 percent of the osprey’s diet in North America.
