Why Are Space Weapons a Concern?

Space weapons are systems designed to attack satellites, interfere with their operation, or, in some cases, strike targets from space. One important category is the anti-satellite weapon, or ASAT, which can be launched from the ground or operate in space. Because satellites provide communication, navigation, weather information, Earth observation and other services, attacking them could affect activities both on Earth and in space.

Some ASAT weapons work by physically colliding with a satellite at extremely high speed. Others can interfere with satellite signals or electronics without destroying the spacecraft. A major problem with destructive attacks is the space debris they can create. A single collision can break a satellite into thousands of fragments, and some of these pieces can remain in orbit for years or even decades. These fragments can then threaten other spacecraft travelling through the same region of space.

Space weapons are also subject to international rules. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits placing nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or stationing them in outer space. However, the treaty does not prohibit every type of conventional weapon in space. This leaves important questions about how future military activities in orbit should be regulated.
