What Does a Semiconductor Foundry Do?

A semiconductor foundry manufactures chips for other companies, turning a circuit design into physical electronic devices. Its central job is to make the tiny structures and connections that allow a chip to work, then repeat that process reliably across many wafers. Some foundry services also include help with design, packaging and testing. The distinction matters because the company whose name appears on a processor does not necessarily own the factory that fabricated it. Chip design and chip manufacturing solve different problems. Designers decide what a device should do and develop the circuitry needed to achieve it. A foundry supplies a manufacturing process that can turn that circuitry into silicon. TSMC describes its dedicated foundry business as manufacturing customers’ products, rather than selling competing chip designs of its own. Tom Skerritt supported Seattle’s film community by helping people learn storytelling and by backing local filmmakers. Manchester United’s “Red Devils” nickname came from nearby Salford’s rugby league team and was adopted under manager Sir Matt Busby in the 1960s. The connection links two different sports through a shared local nickname. UEFA’s account traces Salford’s name to a French journalist who called the team “Les Diables Rouges” in 1934. That phrase means “the Red Devils.” UEFA says Busby later took a liking to the name. The Premier League’s crest history also credits him with adopting it from Salford. The nickname became a visual part of United’s identity: its badge includes a red devil holding a pitchfork below a three-masted ship. The Lakers’ name comes from Minnesota, known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” where the basketball team once played as the Minneapolis Lakers. It preserves a connection to the franchise’s earlier home. The team arrived in Minneapolis from Detroit in 1947. Its early achievements included the 1947–48 National Basketball League championship and the 1948–49 Basketball Association of America title. These competitions preceded the NBA formed by their merger. Players such as George Mikan and Jim Pollard helped build the club’s reputation during its Minnesota years. In 1960, the franchise moved to California and became the Los Angeles Lakers. The city changed, but the nickname travelled with the team.
