Arsenal are called the Gunners because the club grew out of the Royal Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich. These were the woodwinds (flutes , oboes and bassoons), brass (horns and trumpets), percussion (kettle drums) and strings (violins, violas, cellos and double bass).
