Who Told Stories for 1001 Nights?
A
princess in Arabia told stories for 1001 nights to save herself from death.
There was a cruel king, Shahryar who killed his wife and then married a new
wife everyday to put her to death next day. Eventually, he married Sharazad, who
was the daughter of his chief minister. She planned to put an end to these
killings and on her wedding night, she began telling the king a story. But when
she reached the most exciting part of it, she stopped and said if he wanted to
hear the end, he
would
have to let her live for another day. This continued for 1001 nights, until the
king gave up his plan. Among these 1001 stories are the world famous stories of
Sindbad, the sailor and Aladdin. The first written copy was made in Arabic in
about 1000 A.D. and Known as the Arabian Nights.
