What is Gymnastics?

G ymnastics consists of a series of various physical exercises that are performed on equipment, such as horizontal bar, parallel bars, rings, balance beam , pommel horse and vault horse. It was very popular in ancient Greece and was included in the first Olympics in 1896. There are separate exercises for men an Women perform graceful steps, runs , jumps, turns and somersaults on a narrow wooden beam. They also hang from high bars and leap over a vaulting horse. They also perform floor exercises to music which resembles a dancers‘ movement in graceful style. Men hang from a high bar, rings, swing on parallel bars, vault and do handstands . They swing their legs and body on pommel horse and leap over a vaulting horse. Olga Korbut of Soviet Union performed very brilliantly in 1972 Olympics and the widespread television coverage of her performance made Gymnastics a very popular sport.

When were the First Mechanical Clocks Made?

The first mechanical clocks are believed to have been made in China in 1088 AD. Later in 1200s, they were first made in Europe. Such clocks made in Europe were driven by a weight on the end of a cord wound round a drum. As the drum rotated, it turned the hands of the clock. The earliest known clock was made in Spain in 1276 AD and the oldest mechanical clock that still works is in Salisbury cathedral in Britain. It was made in 1368. These clocks had devices called escapements to keep the hands turning at the correct rate, so that the clocks depicted the correct time.

Who was Winston Churchill?

W inston Churchill was a great British prime minister, war leader and writer. He began his career as a soldier. He later joined politics and became a senior minister in Parliament before and during World War I, although he was not very powerful then. In 1940, when the World War 11 threatened Britain, the country chose him as its prime minister. As a leader during war-time, he showed great courage and determination . His roaring speeches helped the people of Britain to fight on when they stood alone against Germany and her allies. He died in 1965.
