Why Are Australia’s Powerball Jackpot Odds So Small?

Australia’s Powerball jackpot is hard to win because a standard game must match one particular combination among 134,490,400 possible outcomes. The draw selects seven main numbers from 35, plus a separate Powerball number from 20. All seven main numbers and the Powerball must match for a Division 1 win, according to Lotterywest’s rules and odds table.

The main numbers do not need to appear in a particular order. There are 6,724,520 different groups of seven that can be selected from 35 numbers. Each group can be paired with any of the 20 Powerball numbers, so multiplying those two counts gives 134,490,400 possible combinations. Only one matches the complete winning result.

A larger jackpot changes the potential payout, not those odds for a standard game. The top prize can grow when nobody wins Division 1, and it is shared if several entries win. Smaller prizes require fewer matches, which is why the chance of winning any prize is much higher than the chance of winning the jackpot.
