What Does ‘Real’ Mean in Real Madrid?

‘Real’ means ‘royal’ in Real Madrid’s name. The word became part of the football club’s identity after King Alfonso XIII granted it the royal title on June 29, 1920.

The decision reached club president Pedro Parages in a letter sent by the king’s grand steward. It gave the club permission to place the title before its existing name. Madrid Football Club consequently became Real Madrid Football Club, and the concession also allowed it to use a royal crown on its crest.

The name and crown therefore share the same historical connection. When supporters see the crown above the badge or hear the word ‘Real’, both point back to that royal recognition in 1920. The prefix is a detail of the club’s history that remains visible in its familiar identity.
