What Is SpaceX and What Does It Do?

SpaceX, short for Space Exploration Technologies, is an American space company founded in 2002. It designs, builds, and launches rockets and spacecraft, with the goal of making space transportation more reusable and less expensive. The company was founded by Elon Musk and has developed vehicles including Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Dragon, and Starship.

One of SpaceX's most important technologies is the reusable Falcon 9 rocket. Unlike traditional rockets that are largely discarded after launch, Falcon 9's first stage is designed to return to Earth and fly again. This allows some of the most expensive parts of a rocket to be reused rather than built from scratch for every mission.

SpaceX also operates Dragon spacecraft for transporting cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station. In May 2020, Crew Dragon carried NASA astronauts to the station, marking the first crewed orbital launch from the United States by a commercially built and operated spacecraft and rocket.

From reusable rockets to spacecraft and Starship, SpaceX has made rocket reusability a central part of its approach to reaching space.
