Where can We See over 1500 Million Years Old Rock Strata?
The Grand
Canyon is the only place
on the
Earth where one can study so many layers of undisturbed rock and an
almost perfect
sequence of fossils. The
Colorado River
has carved this deep gash
in the
Earth's surface.
The canyon
crosses a desert in
Arizona, a
state in the west of the United
States. The
canyon is about 350 km deep.
This is
the deepest gorge anywhere on land. The rocks at the bottom on the Granite
gorge were formed 1700 million
years ago.
They are buried under Tapeats
Sandstone, and are 570 million years Old. At the top, on the rim of the canyon is
the Kaibab Limestone about 270 million years
old.
