Why Are the San Francisco 49ers Called the 49ers?

The San Francisco 49ers are named after the gold seekers associated with California’s Gold Rush of 1849. The number points to a year in regional history. According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the football team adopted the name when San Francisco received an All-America Football Conference franchise in 1946.
The discovery that triggered the rush actually came a year earlier. James Marshall found gold at a sawmill on the American River on January 24, 1848. News spread, and by spring 1849 thousands of people were travelling toward California’s gold fields. Those gold seekers became widely known as the forty-niners.
The nickname therefore connects a twentieth-century football club with a nineteenth-century migration. The National Park Service’s history also describes the hardships behind that migration: scarce food and water, disease, and severe pressure on Indigenous communities and their lands. The team name recalls the Gold Rush era, whose consequences reached far beyond finding gold.
