How Did Tom Skerritt Support Seattle’s Film Community?

Tom Skerritt supported Seattle’s film community by helping people learn storytelling and by backing local filmmakers. His contribution extended beyond acting in films such as Alien and Top Gun to creating opportunities for others to develop their work.
In 2004, he helped found The Film School in Seattle, which focused on storytelling for film. The city’s account identifies screenwriter Stuart Stern as a fellow co-founder. This emphasis connected screen experience with education: students could develop the foundations needed to tell stories in creative settings. In 2012, Skerritt also co-developed the Red Badge Project with former Army Captain Evan Bailey, helping veterans discover and express their own stories.
Seattle recognized that wider contribution with its 2022 Mayor’s Award for Achievement in Film, presented at the Seattle International Film Festival. The award honored his professional work and investment in local storytellers. Sources: City of Seattle and Hallmark’s biography.
