How Did the Rams Get Horns on Their Helmets?

The Rams’ helmet horns began as a player’s painted design. In 1948, Los Angeles Rams halfback Fred Gehrke added the horn emblem to the team’s helmets, creating an early landmark in NFL uniform design. The club’s historical uniform archive identifies Gehrke as the player who painted that first helmet logo.
Instead of relying on a name or initials, the design used the curling shape of a ram’s horn to represent the team. The horn was painted onto the helmet’s surface; it was a graphic, rather than a physical projection. Its curved form made the animal connection visible on the equipment players wore.
The idea also became a link between different generations of Rams uniforms. When the club introduced a redesigned uniform in 2020, it described the original 1948 golden-horn helmet as the first NFL helmet with an emblem. The updated design changed the horn’s shape and finish while keeping it central to the team’s look.
