Who were the Knights?
Knights
were
soldiers on horseback in the
Middle Ages
who fought for a king or a prince. During peacetime,
they served their masters in his household.
Initially, anybody could become a knight. Then horses
and armours became so expensive
that only
rich could buy them. Knighthood became an honour usually given to the rich. Young boys
were trained
for it from the age of seven.
The knights
lost their usefulness in war when guns changed the fighting methods. The British
monarch still
makes people knights as a reward for special service to the country
