Who was Queen Elizabeth?

Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603) was a famous ruler of England. Under her leadership, England became a wealthy and powerful nation. She succeeded her elder sister Mary in 1588. Mary had tried to restore Roman Catholicism in England. Elizabeth led the country back to Protestantism. She was a skilled diplomat and never married. Elizabeth's seamen crushed the Spanish fleet, Armada when they invaded England. This victory made England powerful at sea and gave both wealth and confidence. Great English playwrights, poets and scholars lived during her rein, including the world famous William Shakespeare.
