Who was Charlemagne?

Charlemagne (742 A.D. - 814 A.D.) was a great military ruler. He founded an empire in the 700s A.D. that covered most of the Western Europe. He became the king of the Franks (now France) in 768 A.D. He was skilled in war and soon took over northern Spain, Italy and Germany. He fought for the Church in Rome and in return, he was crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day in 800 A.D. by the Pope.
