When did the Sumerians Live?

Sumer was in the lower part of Mesopotamia, which is now known as Iraq. The Sumerians inhabited this place before 3,500 B.C. and held power till about 2,000 B.C. The place of origin of Sumerians is not known, but probably they came from present day Iran or Turkey. They built cities like Eridu, Uruk and Ur. The ruins of Uruk have shown us the earliest form of writing which was done on clay tablets. Initially, Sumerians wrote in pictograms, which are stylized drawings of objects. Later, they began using simpler symbols which represented sounds. The Sumerians were very fine craftsmen too.
