What are the 7 wonders of the ancient world ?
The Seven
Wonders of the world were seven outstanding man-made objects
that were
built in ancient times. People marvelled at them and called them Seven
Wonders. Of
the Seven Wonders, only one, the pyramids, stand today. Rest Of
them
have been destroyed.
(i)The
Hanging Garden of Babylon. They were a gift from king Nbuchadnezzar to
one of his wives and were probably built high up on the walls
of temples.
(ii)
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (now in Turkey). This was one of the
largest temples
in the ancient world.
(iii)
The Statue of Zenu at
Olympia, Greece. Made of gold and ivory, the stature showed
the king of
gods on
his throne.
(iv)
The Tomb at Halicarnassus( now in Turkey). It was a huge tomb built
for a persian
ruler, Mausolus. It
became so famous that all tombs are now called mausoleums.
(v)
The Colossus of Rhodes in Greece. It is a huge, bronze statue of the Sun
god,
Helios and stood high over the harbour entrance.
(vi)
The Pharos of Alexandria in Egypt. Built in 270 B.C. on the island of
Pharos outside
Alexandria harbour, it was the first modern lighthouse. It had a
wood fire
burning on top.
(vii)
The Egyptian Pyramids. They are huge tombs built by Egyptians
thousands of
years ago and are great feats of engineering.
