What is Gymnastics?

Gymnastics consists of a series of various physical exercises that are performed on equipment, such as horizontal bar, parallel bars, rings, balance beam, pommel horse and vault horse. It was very popular in ancient Greece and was included in the first Olympics in 1896. There are separate exercises for men an Women perform graceful steps, runs, jumps, turns and somersaults on a narrow wooden beam. They also hang from high bars and leap over a vaulting horse. They also perform floor exercises to music which resembles a dancers‘ movement in graceful style. Men hang from a high bar, rings, swing on parallel bars, vault and do handstands. They swing their legs and body on pommel horse and leap over a vaulting horse.

Olga Korbut of Soviet Union performed very brilliantly in 1972 Olympics and the widespread television coverage of her performance made Gymnastics a very popular sport.
