When we feel hungry and see the I food, watery fluid called saliva pours out of salivary glands in our mouth. The saliva makes the chewing of food easier by moisturizing it. Saliva also contains chemicals called enzymes which start to break food down into one of the three types of nutrients our body needs, namely carbohydrates, proteins and fats. So digestion actually begins in our mouth.
