Why do Some Birds Lay Coloured Eggs?
Birds lay eggs to have their offspring. But the number of
eggs laid and the number of young ones that really hatch out differs a lot.
Many eggs are eaten up by egg-robbers like snakes, egg-eating birds, rats, etc.
To protect the egg from being seen by the predators, the nature has endowed
birds to have coloured eggs. The ground-nesting birds usually lay brownish eggs
that merge easily with the reed around and are not easily visible.
Some
birds lay coloured and spotted or blotched eggs which are also other means of
protecting the eggs. The hole nesting birds usually lay white or light coloured
eggs since these eggs remain out of sight.
