Who were the Mongols?
Mongols
were
nomads who lived on the great plains of central Asia. They
were wanderers
and herded huge flocks of sheep, goats, cattle and
horses. They lived in tent villages that they could quickly pack up and take with them when they
moved on to
find new pastures.
They were
expert horsemen and very trained warriors. Under the
Great Genghis Khan, they formed a mighty army in
1200s and swept through China, India, Persia and as far west as Hungary.
Under the
Great Khan and later his grandson Kublai Khan, the Mongols controlled half of the
known world.
But they
were unable to hold the empire together and within 100 years, the Chinese took over the
Mongol empire.
