Who was Known as the Mahatma?
Mahatma
is a
Sanskrit word which means 'great soul'. The term was affectionately applied to Mohandas
Karamchand Gandhi,
who was the most influential leader of the movement that won India's
independence from
British
in 1947. Born in 1869, Gandhiji
studied law in
London and
went to South Africa to work. He preached a policy of non-violence as he led campaigns
against racial
discrimination.
He returned to India in 1915 and joined the freedom movement. India finally achieved
independence in
1947. Gandhiji
tried to stop the violence
that cropped
up between Hindus and Muslims, but was assassinated in
1948.
