When was the First Home Refrigerator Made?
The first
home refrigerator was made in the 19th
century in
the United States. It consisted of an insulated cabinet into
the top of which a block of ice was lowered. Modern automatic
refrigerators appeared in 1918. They keep food at temperatures near freezing points.
The home
refrigerator now is a double-walled box with a hinged door, the space between the
walls being
filled with
insulating material. The door is also double walled and
insulated. A rubber frame on the inside of the door frame maintains a seal to stop warm
air from
leaking into
the box when the door is closed.
