What is a Guinea Pig?

The guinea pig is not a pig, but belongs to the family of rats. It does not come from Guinea, but from Peru. Also known as cavy, Guinea pigs are up to 29 cm long and have no tails. They are usually brown, white, black, grey or a mixture. Some have long silky hair, a hair that forms patterns. Guinea Pigs have been used by scientists in experiments. Some people keep them as pets too. They feed on grass and hay.
