Who Made More than 1000 Inventions?
Thomas
Alva
Edison (1847-1931) made almost 1,300 inventions in his
lifetime. He
lived in United States and when he was only ten years old, he set up
his own
chemical laboratory in his house. His most famous invention
was the phonograph in 1877,
which was a
type of record player that used wax cylinders instead
of discs. His first recording was of himself reciting the rhyme, 'Mary had a little
lamb'. In
1879,
he demonstrated the first successful electric bulb. He
discovered that electricity would flow from the bulb's glowing filament on to a metal
plate inside
the bulb.
This is known as 'Edison's effect'. This was later used by others to make valves
for the
first radio sets. Most of the Edison's inventions were modifications on already
existing ones.
He improved Graham Bell's telephone and enabled conversadons to be
held over
distances of 160 km or more, instead of just a few metres. Edison was one of
the several
people to invent kinetoscope, which was the first machine to produce
moving pictures.
