When were the First Watercolours Used?
Watercolours
have been used in painting since ancient times. They were used on papyrus rolls
in ancient Egypt and the earliest paintings of China. Watercolour is made by
grinding paint in gum. It is water soluble and is applied with a brush.
Watercolour and ink has been used in Chinese art since 618 A.D. during T'ang
Dynasty. During this period, the traditions and techniques of Chinese landscape
paintings were developing. These were mainly painted on silk or sometimes on
paper.
