When were the First Watercolours Used?

Watercolours have been used in painting since ancient times. They were used on papyrus rolls in ancient Egypt and the earliest paintings of China. Watercolour is made by grinding paint in gum. It is water soluble and is applied with a brush. Watercolour and ink has been used in Chinese art since 618 A.D. during T'ang Dynasty. During this period, the traditions and techniques of Chinese landscape paintings were developing. These were mainly painted on silk or sometimes on paper.
