When was the Cotton Gin Invented?
Eli Whitney
of the United States invented the cotton gin in 1793. Till then,
cotton was
used to be plucked by hand from cotton plants. The cotton
gin made this work simple and more cotton could be
produced to make cloth. Cotton plants have balls which are
masses of seeds and fibers. When these are put in a cotton gin, the fibers would be pulled
away from
the seeds. The gin
could be worked by hand, horse or water power. It provided great amount of cotton
needed by
the growing textile industry, which had already been
revolutionized by the invention of spinning machines
and powered looms. In 1798,
Eli Whitney
turned his mass-production activity into factories.
