Chordophone

Chordophone Any musical instrument in which the sound is produced by the vibrations of one or more strings. Chordophones are divided into (i) those without resonators, or with resonators that can be detached while leaving the strings in place (simple chordophones: piano, zither, etc), and (ii) those in which an integral resonator serves to keep the strings in place (composite chordophones: violin, lute, etc). Each type may be further subdivided (eg according to whether the strings are bowed, plucked, or struck); but in the perception of most people the main divisions are between those with keyboards, those with bows, and those with neither. >> keyboard / musical / string instrument
