Atomic Bomb

Atomic bomb A nuclear explosive device (the A-Bomb) which achieves its destructive effects through energy released during the fission of heavy atoms (as in uranium 235 or plutonium-239). The first atomic bombs were used to destroy the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Aug 1945). Atomic weapons have been supplanted by thermonuclear weapons, but a fission weapon trigger is an essential component of these devices. >> hydrogen Bomb; Manhattan project; nuclear fission / weapons
