When Did the Warriors Become Golden State?

The Warriors became the Golden State Warriors in 1971, when the franchise moved across San Francisco Bay to Oakland. Before that change, they had spent nine seasons playing as the San Francisco Warriors. The club’s history began much farther east. Founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, it moved to the West Coast in 1962. The sequence of names therefore records different chapters of the same franchise: Philadelphia, San Francisco and then Golden State. Another move came in 2019, when the Warriors returned to San Francisco to play at Chase Center in the Mission Bay neighborhood. The Golden State name stayed with them. Following the locations alongside the names helps explain how one basketball club can be associated with both San Francisco and Oakland, while tracing its beginnings to Philadelphia. What is Proxima Centauri?

Proxima Centauri is the closest known star in the Solar System and is about 10,000 times dimmer than the Sun. It is about 4.3 light years away and is visible with binoculars. It is the faintest member of a triple star system called Alpha Centauri present in the constellation of Centaurus. The other two stars form a brilliant double star when viewed through a small astronomical telescope. They are each about as bright as the Sun and take 80 years to orbit each other. The Proxima Centauri flares up every now and then and appears brighter than normal for just a few minutes. It takes about a million years to orbit the bright stars.

Tom Skerritt supported Seattle’s film community by helping people learn storytelling and by backing local filmmakers. Manchester United’s “Red Devils” nickname came from nearby Salford’s rugby league team and was adopted under manager Sir Matt Busby in the 1960s. The connection links two different sports through a shared local nickname. UEFA’s account traces Salford’s name to a French journalist who called the team “Les Diables Rouges” in 1934. That phrase means “the Red Devils.” UEFA says Busby later took a liking to the name. The Premier League’s crest history also credits him with adopting it from Salford. The nickname became a visual part of United’s identity: its badge includes a red devil holding a pitchfork below a three-masted ship. The Lakers’ name comes from Minnesota, known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” where the basketball team once played as the Minneapolis Lakers. It preserves a connection to the franchise’s earlier home. The team arrived in Minneapolis from Detroit in 1947. Its early achievements included the 1947–48 National Basketball League championship and the 1948–49 Basketball Association of America title.
