What Does a Semiconductor Foundry Do?

-
Image
A semiconductor foundry manufactures chips for other companies, turning a circuit design into physical electronic devices. Its central job is to make the tiny structures and connections that allow a chip to work, then repeat that process reliably across many wafers. Some foundry services also include help with design, packaging and testing. The distinction matters because the company whose name appears on a processor does not necessarily own the factory that fabricated it. Chip design and chip manufacturing solve different problems. Designers decide what a device should do and develop the circuitry needed to achieve it. A foundry supplies a manufacturing process that can turn that circuitry into silicon. TSMC describes its dedicated foundry business as manufacturing customers’ products, rather than selling competing chip designs of its own. Companies that focus on design while contracting out fabrication are often called fabless. Other businesses combine chip design with their own manu...

What is a Laptop Computer?

-
A computer that fits in a briefcase? A computer that weighs less than a new born baby? A computer you do not have to plug in? A computer you can use on your lap on an airplane? Yes, to all these questions Laptop computers are the answers. They are also called notebook computers and are wonderfully portable and functional, and popular with travellers, who need a computer that can go with them. In terms of computing power, modern notebook computers are nearly equivalent to personal computers. They have the same CPUs, memory capacity, and disk drives. However, all this power in a small package is expensive. Notebook computers cost about twice as much as equivalent regular-sized computers. Notebook computers come with battery packs that enable you to run them without plugging them in. However, the batteries need to be recharged after every few hours.

What Is Goaltending in NBA Basketball?

-
Image
Goaltending prevents a player from stopping a ball that is already falling toward the basket with a chance to go in. In the NBA, touching such a ball on its downward flight is a violation, so a spectacular-looking swat can still give the other team points. The backboard creates another important boundary. During a field-goal attempt, a player cannot touch a ball that still has a chance to score after it has contacted the backboard above rim level, whether it is rising or falling. Related basket-interference rules also prohibit touching the ball above the rim while it is inside the imaginary cylinder extending upward from the basket. When a defender commits the violation at the opponent’s basket, the shooting team receives two or three points according to where the shot was attempted. If an attacking player commits basket interference at the basket they are trying to score in, no points count and the opponents receive possession. The NBA’s Rule 11 sets out these boundaries and penaltie...

How Did Tom Skerritt Support Seattle’s Film Community?

-
Image
Tom Skerritt supported Seattle’s film community by helping people learn storytelling and by backing local filmmakers. His contribution extended beyond acting in films such as Alien and Top Gun to creating opportunities for others to develop their work. In 2004, he helped found The Film School in Seattle, which focused on storytelling for film. The city’s account identifies screenwriter Stuart Stern as a fellow co-founder. This emphasis connected screen experience with education: students could develop the foundations needed to tell stories in creative settings. In 2012, Skerritt also co-developed the Red Badge Project with former Army Captain Evan Bailey, helping veterans discover and express their own stories. Seattle recognized that wider contribution with its 2022 Mayor’s Award for Achievement in Film, presented at the Seattle International Film Festival. The award honored his professional work and investment in local storytellers. Sources: City of Seattle and Hallmark’s biograph...

Why Are Manchester United Called the Red Devils?

-
Image
Manchester United’s “Red Devils” nickname came from nearby Salford’s rugby league team and was adopted under manager Sir Matt Busby in the 1960s. The connection links two different sports through a shared local nickname. UEFA’s account traces Salford’s name to a French journalist who called the team “Les Diables Rouges” in 1934. That phrase means “the Red Devils.” UEFA says Busby later took a liking to the name. The Premier League’s crest history also credits him with adopting it from Salford. The nickname became a visual part of United’s identity: its badge includes a red devil holding a pitchfork below a three-masted ship. The ship has a separate origin in Manchester’s coat of arms and trading history. A single crest therefore combines a symbol of the city with a nickname borrowed from its sporting neighbourhood.

Why Are the Los Angeles Lakers Called the Lakers?

-
Image
The Lakers’ name comes from Minnesota, known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” where the basketball team once played as the Minneapolis Lakers. It preserves a connection to the franchise’s earlier home. The team arrived in Minneapolis from Detroit in 1947. Its early achievements included the 1947–48 National Basketball League championship and the 1948–49 Basketball Association of America title. These competitions preceded the NBA formed by their merger. Players such as George Mikan and Jim Pollard helped build the club’s reputation during its Minnesota years. In 1960, the franchise moved to California and became the Los Angeles Lakers. The city changed, but the nickname travelled with the team. Reading the name alongside that history reveals an earlier chapter of a club now closely associated with Los Angeles.
