How Big is the Earth?

The distance around the Earth, that is, it's circumference around the equator is 40,091 kilometres. The diameter (the distance across the centre of the Earth) at the equator is 12,756 kilometres. The Earth is slightly smaller when measured between the poles (12,713 kilometres), so it is not an exact sphere. If the Earth is weighted on a weighing machine, it would be nearly 6x10 tonnes.

The University of North Carolina football team is known as the Tar Heels because its nickname comes from North Carolina’s long history of producing tar, pitch, and turpentine from its pine forests. These materials, often called naval stores, were important to the state’s economy during the colonial period and the nineteenth century. The expression “Tar Heel” became more widely used during the American Civil War. At first, it was reportedly used as an insult toward North Carolina soldiers, but the soldiers gradually adopted it as a symbol of determination. The heavenly bodies were formed when smaller bodies, a few kilometers across, collided together. Eventually, when the stars, the planets and the satellites were formed, their surfaces were cratered by later collisions.   The craters on the moon were formed during the first few hundred million years of the moon. They have remained so since they were formed. The moon cooled down quickly and preserved them forever. Moreover, there is no atmosphere to produce winds and weather which could wear down these craters to some extent.   In contrast, the Earth's craters have been worn away by wind and rain.
