How Did Tom Skerritt Support Seattle’s Film Community?

-

Tom Skerritt supported Seattle’s film community by helping people learn storytelling and by backing local filmmakers. His contribution extended beyond acting in films such as Alien and Top Gun to creating opportunities for others to develop their work. In 2004, he helped found The Film School in Seattle, which focused on storytelling for film. The city’s account identifies screenwriter Stuart Stern as a fellow co-founder. This emphasis connected screen experience with education: students could develop the foundations needed to tell stories in creative settings. In 2012, Skerritt also co-developed the Red Badge Project with former Army Captain Evan Bailey, helping veterans discover and express their own stories. Seattle recognized that wider contribution with its 2022 Mayor’s Award for Achievement in Film, presented at the Seattle International Film Festival. The award honored his professional work and investment in local storytellers. Sources: City of Seattle and Hallmark’s biograph...

Which Mammals Fly in the Dark?

-
Bats are the only mammals which can truly fly in the dark. They are nocturnal and so are active and fly at night. The wing of a bat is different from the wing of a bird. It is a skin-like membrane, the patagium, stretched between enormously long arm and hand finger bones. Most bats are insectivorous while some are fruits-eating. The vampire bats feed on the blood of large mammals and some others feed on mice, voles, frogs and fish. Bats are able to find their prey and avoid obstacles in the dark by using a sound radar
system called echolocation. They emit very high-pitched pulses of sound called ultrasound which cannot be heard by us. The sound waves bounce back to the bat after hitting an object. The bat hears the patterns of these echoes and analyses it to give a 'sound picture‘ of the object and the surroundings.

What Counts as an Assist in NBA Basketball?

-
Image
In NBA basketball, an assist credits a player whose pass leads directly to a teammate’s successful basket. It recognizes the pass that helps complete the scoring play. A pass to an open shooter or a teammate cutting toward the hoop can qualify, as Jr. NBA explains . Being the last person to pass the ball is not enough on its own. The NBA Video Rulebook says the scorer must react immediately toward the basket after receiving the pass. In its example, a player catches the ball on the wing, pauses to assess the defense, then makes a three-pointer. The passer receives no assist because that immediate connection is missing. Only one assist can be credited for each made field goal. An inbound pass can qualify too, provided it leads directly to the basket. For example, a quick pass to a teammate who immediately makes a layup can reward both players: the scorer gets the points, while the passer gets the assist.

What Does the White House Press Secretary Do?

-
Image
The White House press secretary is the president’s spokesperson, explaining the administration’s activities, decisions and agenda to the news media. The job provides reporters with an official point of contact when the president cannot answer every question personally. Briefings are the most visible part of the work: the press secretary makes announcements and responds to journalists’ questions. Much of the job also happens away from the podium. Responsibilities can include distributing statements and speech texts, responding to requests for information, helping prepare presidential press conferences and arranging press coverage of official trips. The position connects two groups with different responsibilities. The press secretary works for the president and presents the administration’s position; reporters seek information and examine its claims. As the National Archives explains, balancing the president’s needs with those of the press has long been a central challenge of the role...

Why Are Manchester United Called the Red Devils?

-
Image
Manchester United’s “Red Devils” nickname came from nearby Salford’s rugby league team and was adopted under manager Sir Matt Busby in the 1960s. The connection links two different sports through a shared local nickname. UEFA’s account traces Salford’s name to a French journalist who called the team “Les Diables Rouges” in 1934. That phrase means “the Red Devils.” UEFA says Busby later took a liking to the name. The Premier League’s crest history also credits him with adopting it from Salford. The nickname became a visual part of United’s identity: its badge includes a red devil holding a pitchfork below a three-masted ship. The ship has a separate origin in Manchester’s coat of arms and trading history. A single crest therefore combines a symbol of the city with a nickname borrowed from its sporting neighbourhood.
