What is Figure Skating?

Figure skating is one of the ice-skating sports and involves making patterns called figures on ice. Figure skating is of two types: school figure and free skating. School figures are based on a figure-of-eight pattern. Skaters try to make both circles of a figure-of-eight of the same size and have to follow the rules of how to hold the body. Figure skating can be done on both skates or on only one. The skaters need specially shaped skates fixed to high, laced boots. In free-skating, skaters leap, spin and make other smoothly linked movements.
